Participatory Planning for Integrated Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programmes: Guidelines and Manual

2020 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

These guidelines are to help planners and managers in national governments to develop their own rural water supply and sanitation programmes. They can also be used by consultants, and NGOs could adapt them for their programmes. The Guidelines have been developed to help planners and managers to meet two challenges in rural water supply and sanitation (RWSS): 1. how to integrate the different components of RWSS - water supply, sanitation and hygiene promotion, and now, water resource management (in relation to domestic water supply and sanitation), together with the institutional arrangements to provide the services. 2. to enable all the stakeholders to participate in the planning process - women and men in the villages and communities to be served; field staff of implementing and facilitating agencies; the various technical and management staff at district, provincial and central levels; and other organisations including NGOs and the private sector. The Guidelines and supporting Manual provide a participatory process and methods to enable the user to address both these challenges. The process and methods can be applied in most contexts - they are intended to help the user to develop their own solutions to their own issues and problems.

Participatory Rural Development in Pakistan

2020 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

The stories of nine rural support programs (RSPs) related in this book focus on their partnership--which started in a small way in late 1982--with rural communities in Pakistan through participatory organizations of ordinary men and women. In each case, the emphasis is on change and outcomes. The nine RSPs work in partnership with rural communities in 93 districts in the four provinces of Pakistan, Northern Areas, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. They have helped organise nearly 1.67 million rural households into 100,700 participatory organizations of men and women with 1.90 million members. The RSPs have used these organizations to deliver a variety of inputs and services, build physical infrastructure, enhance skills, transfer technologies, and link them with other service providers, especially governments. Much as these investments and activities are appreciated, and some of their good effects well demonstrated, perhaps a far more important contribution of community organizations has been to enable ordinary people to participate in making decisions that affect their well-being and claim resources and services from outsiders, particularly the public sector agencies. This has been of particular importance to the poor and women who are often the most disadvantaged groups. Getting together, speaking out, participating in making decisions, doing new things, going out, and working with outsiders are demonstrably necessary for confidence and empowerment. The experience of rural support programs has convinced governments and international donor community that community organizations should be part of the mainstream in the effort to reduce poverty.

Participatory Arts in International Development

2020 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

This book explores the practical delivery of participatory arts projects in international development. Bringing together an interdisciplinary group of academics, international development professionals and arts practitioners, the book engages honestly with the competing challenges faced by the different groups of people involved. Participatory arts are becoming increasingly popular in international development circles, fuelled in part by the increased accessibility of audio-visual media in the digital age, and also by the move towards participatory discourses in the wake of the UN’s Agenda 2030. The book asks: What do participatory arts projects look like in practice, and why are they used as an international development tool? How can we develop practical and sustainable development projects on the ground, localising best practice according to cultural, economic and linguistic contexts? What are the enablers of, and barriers to, successful participatory initiatives, and how can we evaluate past projects to learn and feed into future projects? Written to appeal to both academics and practitioners, this book would also be suitable for teaching on courses related to participatory development, community arts, and culture and development.

Participatory Action Research Approaches and Methods

2020 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

Participatory Action Research (PAR) approaches and methods have seen an explosion of recent interest in the social and environmental sciences. PAR involves collaborative research, education and action which is oriented towards social change, representing a major epistemological challenge to mainstream research traditions. It has recently been the subject of heated critique and debate and rapid theoretical and methodological development. This book captures these developments, exploring the justification, theorisation, practice and implications of PAR. It offers a critical introduction to understanding and working with PAR in different social, spatial and institutional contexts. The authors engage with PAR’s radical potential, while maintaining a critical awareness of its challenges and dangers. The book is divided into three parts. The first part explores the intellectual, ethical and pragmatic contexts of PAR; the development and diversity of approaches to PAR; recent poststructuralist perspectives on PAR as a form of power; the ethic of participation; and issues of safety and well-being. Part two is a critical exploration of the politics, places and practices of PAR. Contributors draw on diverse research experiences with differently situated groups and issues including environmentally sustainable practices, family livelihoods, sexual health, gendered experiences of employment, and specific communities such as people with disabilities, migrant groups, and young people. The principles, dilemmas and strategies associated with participatory approaches and methods including diagramming, cartographies, art, theatre, photovoice, video and geographical information systems are also discussed. Part three reflects on how effective PAR is, including the analysis of its products and processes, participatory learning, representation and dissemination, institutional benefits and challenges, and working between research, action, activism and change. The authors find that a spatial perspective and an attention to scale offer helpful means of negotiating the potentials and paradoxes of PAR. This approach responds to critiques of PAR by highlighting how the spatial politics of practising participation can be mobilised to create more effective and just research processes and outcomes. The book adds significant weight to the recent critical reappraisal of PAR, suggesting why, when, where and how we might take forward PAR’s commitment to enabling collaborative social transformation. It will be particularly useful to researchers and students of Human Geography, Development Studies and Sociology.

Participatory Governance

Participatory Design

2020 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

The voices in this collection are primarily those of researchers and developers concerned with bringing knowledge of technological possibilities to bear on informed and effective system design. Their efforts are distinguished from many previous writings on system development by their central and abiding reliance on direct and continuous interaction with those who are the ultimate arbiters of system adequacy; namely, those who will use the technology in their everyday lives and work. A key issue throughout is the question of who does what to whom: whose interests are at stake, who initiates action and for what reason, who defines the problem and who decides that there is one. The papers presented follow in the footsteps of a small but growing international community of scholars and practitioners of participatory systems design. Many of the original European perspectives are represented here as well as some new and distinctively American approaches. The collection is characterized by a rich and diverse set of perspectives and experiences that, despite their differences, share a distinctive spirit and direction -- a more humane, creative, and effective relationship between those involved in technology's design and use, and between technology and the human activities that motivate the technology.
